    Jamaica Inn

Set in the Cornish moors of 1821 Jamaica Inn is a dark even gothic tale of sex, piracy and smuggling from the famous novel of Daphne Du Maurier directed by ALFRED HITCHCOCK in 1939. The only good thing about the film is the moodily atmospheric ambiance of the feature. Other than that the film is one of Alfred Hitchcock's worst efforts. Nothing seems to work in this story of a young woman whose sense of right and wrong is all challenged in numerous ways. With a poor script, some hammy acting It looks like it was patched together hastily. The meticulous Hitchcock missed the boat even with Charles Laughton and Maureen O'Hara. He had other films on his mind. It all seemed he wanted to get this one out of the way for Paramount which was not Hitchcock's home studio in the late 1930's and part of the 40's.
