I had the great pleasure many years ago to experience the solo Frankie Valli in concert. He was a marvelous entertainer (he apologized for having a cold, which, he said prevented him from hitting the high notes! Nobody noticed; we were all having such a good time) Clint Eastwood's loving valentine to the group soars during the performances. The film fails in the dramatic intervals in which all the usual clichés about the price of fame are trotted out. These episodes between the concerts feature a considerable amount of bickering and infighting. However, two performances stand out: that of John Lloyd Young offers a level-headed, computer-cool Frankie and Vincent Piazza generates sparks as troubled band member Danny. But, the results are not up to snuff-for an Eastwood film. Too bad.
