    Johnny Got His Gun

The title of this film is not meant to be playful in any way as this taut war feature both written and directed by once blacklisted writer Dalton Trumbo is as serious and bleak as war can be. One of the best reasons for seeing the film is to witness a once great star/actor TIMOTHY BOTTOMS who during the 70's was the greatest thing since sliced bread. Apparently, he faded away by the end of the 70's. I must google him as I'm not sure of anything he's made except for his brilliant performance in 1970's THE LAST PICTURE SHOW directed by then budding film maker, Peter Bogdanovitch. Bogdanovitch's first feature film still remains his best much like Orson Welles with CITIZEN KANE! Nothing Welles did after KANE could match what was chosen by the American Film Institute as the greatest film of the 20th Century. I'm not a huge KANE fan and happen to feel that Welles's second feature, in which he did not star, THE MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS, from the Booth Tarkington novel, is his greatest film. (1942) AMBERSONS is a must see film especially if it is not the cut and butcherd copy which RKO Pictures released as an hour and a half film, destroying all other film footage so that Welles could not get his hand on the material to re-edit it! Only a handful of copies of the Welles vision of the film survive with Agnes Moorehead giving what is, arguably, her greatest performance on film, this divine actor who was nominated six times for the Oscar but was always the bridesmaid.
