The original Kick Ass killed the supero hero genre for me and I don't mean that in a negative way. It was so irreverently in your face and original that it was impossible for me to conceive of how a movie about masked vigilantes could be more brilliantly executed. It remains my favorite amongst all supero hero films to date. This sequel however is a far cry from the original and I'm beginning to think that has first and foremost to do with original writer/director Matthew Vaughn not returning to helm the 2nd instalment. The fact that Chloe Grace Moretz is no longer the cute little 11 yr old who stole the show in part 1 is also a huge novelty loss for the sequel, further compounded by the "Mean Girls" high school storyline which makes up most of her screentime. Carrey's Col Stars and Stripes could have been interesting if he'd been given more than 5 minutes to strut his stuff but he's completely wasted here. Most of the laughs come via Chris Mintz-Plasse and his collection of super-villains but it's not enough. Unlike the original, this film's tone is all wrong and it's unable to balance the violence and slapstick with nearly the same efficiency. A perfect example of how studios just can't leave a good thing alone.
