This film which is a fairly important one is nonetheless a difficult one to rate. One must start with the startling fact that this feature film is based on astonishing facts that occurred when Ronald Reagan first took the White House after January of 1981. I mention this only to place the film at a moment in history most would immediately recognize either from H. S. or College classes or living through that period. Christian Carion, the Oscar Nominated director of JOYEUX NOEL, is now tackling an event during a critical point of the Cold War. My problem with the film is not one of factual inaccuracy; PERHAPS it's the VERY FACTS THAT BECOME THE STUMBLING BLOCK FOR ME! THE FEW FACTS I'LL MENTION GIVE NOTHING AWAY OF THE FILM AS IT IS MATERIAL MOST ARE FAMILIAR WITH. Some obsequious French Engineer in Moscow DOES meet up with a top KGB Colonel eventually to be thrust into a gargantuan theft of Soviet information, probably the greatest such heist in Soviet history if not all of history. It obviously was a sensation world wide, such espionage cases coming along every once in a very blue moon. Therein lay the problem for me. I knew too much about the case thus just watching factual information that left little or no suspense for me. Had I known nothing of this heist... well!!!
