    La Princesse de Clèves

I remember reading La Princesse de Clèves as an undergraduate so vividly, especially as it is perhaps considered the first French novel ever, fiction in the form of short stories and novels literally non-existent until the 17th Century, my area of expertise at U of T. And to think it was written by a woman, the great Madame de La Fayette. BRAVO, I say! When reading this romantic novel one must always remember it was the first of its kind. Don't be tempted to say, I've read this sort of thing before. No, you did not as this was the first romantic drama of its kind.

Unfortunately, the movie, with a screenplay by the great Jean Cocteau and starring the VERY GREAT Jean Marais and Marina Vlady doesn't quite hit the mark for me. It was an audacious move to turn PRINCESSE into a film. The source material is so brilliant that disappointments were likely to arise. The novel is too fully entrenched in my head to see it turned into another medium! For those who know nothing about French 17th Century literature and the birth of the novel, this film might be very satisfying.
