    Love is Strange

Love is Strange is a very contemporary look into the lives of two older gay men, a couple who decide to marry not thinking of the ultimate consequences. George, who yet teaches at his age doesn't seem viable to me (it's hardly possible to be teaching as a senior citizen) In any case what comes of this marriage is a whole slew of problems neither was probably counting on. With new U. S. laws, I don't think someone can be fired from a job for being gay or for FOR entering into a civil union/ marriage. So I question the basic premise of the film. Stable, comfortable, older lives which suddenly see a drastic change will inevitably cause problems for the couple but also for those around them. John Lithgow and Alfred Molina are extremely competent actors, beyond competent I would dare say having seen both in film and on stage. There is nothing at all wrong with their performances. Gay actor Cheyenne Jackson has ironically been married to a man, has already divorced and is presently with another man, his marriage status unknown. Oscar winner Marisa Tomei is a delight to watch in any role she plays. She has a 'realness' about her, a very natural flow that makes her every performance a delight. Besides her Oscar, she has been nominated 3 other times. Writer/Director Ira Sachs does his best with difficult material. Because of this difficulty and the bravery in bringing such a premise (growing by the day) to the screen so quickly I will have to rate it a 7. It is a film that deserves viewing if only to understand a little better what the majority of heterosexual citizens take for granted.
