I think everyone who gave it a high rating is either blinded by the name Ang Lee or by the sex displayed in the movie. It was a terrible movie. Too long, too slow, the execution of the plot too stupid. Saw it on Halloween night. Should have stayed home and watched an old movie on tv. Anything would have been better.

I agree with you. The plot was implausible even though it was based on a true story. The Kuma Sutra sex scenes were completely unnecessary to depict the "sexual lust" as a basic human instinct. But women in general during that time period in China did go "goo goo ga ga" if they received something like that diamond (or lots of money) You have to understand the effect of the poverty in China at the time to fully appreciate this. But I would still recommend watching this movie coz Tony Leung was superb. I have not seen so much evil in an actor's face and eyes since Al Pacino playing Michael Corleone in The Godfather. Joan Chen was great as the "tai tai". She played this part perfectly but you have to understand this terminology from the Chinese point of view. The chit chat during the mah jong games was spot on. Unfortunately, this film is not as good as Ang Lee's other films.
