    Magnificent Obsession

This 1954 Douglas Sirk melodrama is what first paired Jane Wyman and Rock Hudson in what would be an enormous hit for UNIVERSAL INTERNATIONAL, as Universal was known at the time. It's real weepie, but a great film that shows rotten things happen to very good people. The SALVATION of the movie could not be accepted by today's audience, but in 1954 they ate it up along with the dishes as well.

If interested in the Jane Wyman/RockHudson duo, I wrote a very detailed review of their next Douglas Sirk film, ALL THAT HEAVEN ALLOWS coming the very following year. You will find tons of information on Sirk, why this type of movie was so popular in the 1950's plus the very detailed analysis of the film itself... wonderful, melodramatic films in their glory days. Douglas Sirk's last Hollywood weepie was the biggest money maker of 1959... IMITATION OF LIFE starring Lana Turner, John Gavin, Sandra Dee, Susan Konheur and Juanita Moore in OSCAR NOMINATED performances with MAHALIA JACKSON at her singing best at the climax of the film.
