    Manhattan

I finally got around to seeing Woody Allen's 1979 masterpiece MANHATTAN which is nothing short of miraculous. The sumptuous black and white cinematography with the added music of George Gershwin makes New York city come so alive. I wish I could have partaken of that N. Y. City of 35 years ago. It still is my favourite city in the world, really my second home. The drama, romance and, of course, the Woody Allen comedy is so good and has stood the test of time, still a remarkable film. Like all Allen films there are a whole slew of characters who inhabit this world. One fact of note is witnessing a young Meryl Streep as Jill who plays the lesbian ex-wife of Isaac Davis, the Woody character. As well I would call attention to a disarmingly young Mariel Heminway playing Woody's 17 year old girlfriend. The movie looks so gorgeous yet Woody is able to capture the seedy sexual side of the the city in those pre-Aids years when sex literally abounded in every corner of the city. Woody, I must stress again captures the time and place of N. Y. 1979 to the point that it creates an enduring portrait that can be studied from a historical point of view for ages to come. Simply grand film! A MUST SEE!
