    Men, Women & Children

Men, Women & Children deals with much that is important in our viral age, the problem being that it's all been said before. I think it's admirable of Jason Reitman to be tackling the all important issue of non-communication in our present day society; the idea that parents or guardians care but simply don't understand. The problem is that matters seem out of joint with this film. Jason Reitman has been having much trouble with his films since his earlier successes, especially with UP IN THE AIR. With last year's LABOR DAY starring Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin, the critics were absolutely savage in earing the film apart. The critics seem to feel Reitman has lost his way and has nothing relevant to say. I saw LABOR DAY twice. I see their point, but I still loved the movie. Men, Women & Children brings up the same sort of problem as post UP IN THE AIR films but this one failed to grab me.

Jason Reitman writes all his scripts and then directs: the old "AUTEUR" theory. My advice to Mr. Reitman is to go a totally different route. Writing alone, as Jason Reitman does, is difficult. TRY A COLLABORATOR! Many writers have gotten back on track by so doing! Another piece of advice which would be perfect in his present predicament is to direct screenplays written by others. It will give him a totally fresh approach on tackling a particular subject. Sir Alfred Hitchcock, Howard Hawks, William Wyler, George Cukor and many, many more great directors never once wrote a screenplay and they remain legendary. Perhaps Mr. Reitman should take this under consideration as things are not going well for him. Good directors are needed for many good scripts which unfortunately go to hack directors of sorts. Good Luck, Jason! It's been a number of tough years.
