I am going to start my harangue about how despicable and unfair it was that DORIS DAY did not get an Oscar Nomination for MIDNIGHT LACE, this incredible dramatic role, nor for other dramatic roles such as JULIE and her formidable work in LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME with James Cagney, who did get an Oscar Nomination for his role. Doris was always viewed as a comedienne and singer and never taken seriously as a dramatic actress though one only need check out some of her roles to see how worthy she is.
Midnight Lace costars Rex Harrison and John Gavin is again on hand to support the damsel in distress. Another viewing pleasure is to witness Myrna Loy, as Kit's aunt long after her heyday at MGM. The great Herbert Marshall is also on hand, a luminary actor of the 30's and 40's. particularly grand when playing opposite Bette Davis. I suppose one can list this feature in the melodrama genre, but what a fascinating ride we take with this outstanding feature.
Kit (Doris Day) is for all intense and purposes a stalked woman, first by an abnormally creepy voice, but it goes on to get much, much worse. Her panic registers so well with the viewer as we can hear the voice as well. This mystery is aided immensely by the well known London fog that settles over the city like a pall! The thriller never seems to let up for a moment till we are brought to the edge of our sets with a dynamic conclusion that might leave you screaming! THIS IS A DORIS DAY FILM YOU CAN'T MISS!!!
