Moneyball is a great baseball movie based on the true story of the Oakland Athletics general manager Billy Beane and the development of the science of sabermetrics. This is an original baseball story in that it shows how Billy Bean, with his assistant general manager, use the science of sabermetrics to help build a better team within a tight budget to compete more effectively against richer teams in Major League Baseball. The movie shows that simply using old traditions and statistics are not necessarily the best for fielding a good baseball team – so the science of sabermetrics is born. This movie is educational showing how sabermetrics helps win games. Slugging percentage and on base percentage are terms derived from sabermetrics which are used today throughout Major League Baseball. Baseball is a sport where there is a big disparity between ball clubs who have lots of money and those that don’t have lots of money. Sabermetrics, coupled with old traditions and statistics, helps make a more leveled playing field for all teams. This is an interesting film showing the art and science behind baseball. As the movie tries to parallel baseball with life in general, it is easy to see how money can’t buy everything.
