    Mouchette

I've been waiting all my life to see brilliant Robert Bresson's MOUCHETTE. In French MOUCHE = a fly so MOUCHETTE would literally be LITTLE FLY. The life of Mouchette, a 14 year old girl seems to signify something as insignificant as the common housefly. Bresson who has always had an interest in children and adolescents elevates his art with this 1967 film that will break your heart. Deprived of every and any comfort in life, a family which is a living hell, I tend to liken Mouchette to some wild animal trapped in a cage from which there is no escape. The film is so stark, so dark as to reflect Mouchette's extreme misery. Bresson and Bernanos (director, writers) were very devout Catholics and their empathy for this young creature could not be any clearer. When one calculates her all too real horror of daily living it would be safe to say she is one of the youngest tragic protagonists in film and literature. (The movie is based on the Bernanos novel) This is a movie in which words are used sparingly to add to the feeling of solitude and non-communication. The ending of the film SHOCKED me. In no way was I prepared for it. Mouchette's simplicity as a motion picture is the very stuff that makes it a very great film.
