LAST LOVE is exactly the type of movie everyone should see yet, as is too often the case with great human interest stories, very few do see. The more is the pity. This story of love and loss is tremendously touching because we get to know the people involved and care for them a great deal. From the opening shot, one of death, we understand this will be a tough journey, but one we do not dare miss. Michael Caine still has it altogether as a man and actor though he is now in his 80's if that is at all believable He is a widower living in Paris, in solitude and oblivion when a chance encounter with a very young lady slowly leads to his salvation and that of his two children. Mr. Caine is extraordinary as in every one of his countless films. Clémence Poésy plays the loveable young French woman in a very understated performance that is really true about all the performances in the film. The consummate MISS JANE ALEXANDER plays the sick wife whose days are numbered. She appears to her widower well, in his mind, when he is at his lowest. Justin Kirk and Gillian Anderson play Caine's (Mr. Morgan) angry children. What I loved so much about this film is that it shows how a stranger can often make a lifetime of hurt and pain slowly disappear, heal family wounds and offer them ( and us ) some comfort and joy as things begin to turn around in quite an unexpected twist. This film is hardly gloom and doom though it deals with very serious issues. The director wisely imbues the film with some welcoming scenes of respite which do not distract from the main issues at hand. The script is fragile but real and I believed every word everyone uttered. This is not a film in which cinemtography plays the usual crucial role, but there is a breathtaking vista of Saint Malo where Mr. Morgan still owns a house. One particular view from a house window is so enchanting as to take the breath away. For me the cast was perfect. I could not possibly think of other actors in these roles after seeing the film. I love film very much and I realize more and more how important the job of a casting director really is. Get the wrong actors and the film will probably bomb. Hire the appropriate persons and the film sort of makes itself, so to speak. The film might have been called THE LAST LOVE OF Mr. MORGAN when first released, but on DVD it is now simply called LAST LOVE. It is worth your viewing especially if you are nearing 40 not to speak of an absolute must for those heading for older age.
