    My Fair Lady

Since " My Fair Lady " is returning to BROADWAY where it all began in 1956, I thought I'd take another look at the brilliant George Cukor film that finally brought the director his long awaited Oscar after some 10 nominations. Colin Firth seems to be set to play Professor Higgins, a very wise choice.

Forget the drama of Audrey Hepburn vs. Julie Andrews. Jack Warner was simply not going to have an unknown play Eliza for a musical he paid big, big money in 1964, namely 5 million dollars for the rights. Admittedly, Audrey Hepburn WAS a little too old for the role, but she did just fine though the Academy snubbed their noses at her, not honouring her even with an Oscar Nomination. Rex Harrison who won the Broadway Tony and then the Oscar for Professor Higgins befuddles me because I just don't think he's that good or that he should have won the Oscar. The supporting cast, many in the Broadway original, were splendid, especially Dame Gladys Cooper and Stanley Holloway, both Oscar Nominated.

The film is a big luxurious showcase we don't see any longer in our day and age. The Cecil Beaton costume designs, the set decorations, the final draft of the screenplay, the cinematography and more were all brilliant. My Fair Lady deserved to win all the Oscars it did! Though I am hardly of that era, I am an Oscar fanatic. It's simply joyous news that Mr. Cukor finally won an Oscar for his brilliant direction of this musical.

Being a period piece and restored to its scintillating 1964 rendition, My Fair Lady holds up well... so well because every effort in every department was met in creating a masterpiece. And that cast! My God! What a superlative one. Thank God My Fair Lady was made just a few years before the demise of the Hollywood Musical. It would be very sad not to have this work in our film archives.
