What an incredible film title! "NO" grabs your attention straight away even not knowing what the film is about. What is it that people are saying "NO" to... One thing's certain... you can't say NO to this Oscar nominated foreign film of 2012. If it wasn't for the world acclaim for AMOUR, nominated in the same category, "NO" would have easily won the Oscar, in fact, I think it should have won. Well this unbelievable political thriller is based on true facts in the republic of Chile during the 1980's when General Pinochet was leading the country. Needless to say Chile was in one bloody mess. South America has forever had problems with dictators and major coups since time immemorial, and this is FACT! These countries have had more than their fair share of disaster at the hands of their horrific leaders... kidnappings followed by murder with bodies never found again. Any intellectual was at risk of being destroyed as so many were, disappearing forever. I was a kid during the 1980's but by the time I was a teen I knew all about the disastrous government of Pinochet, with the killings of so many young people who were in protest against the government. South American countries have always been in turmoil, as mentioned... the most famous and notorious being the dictatorship of Juan Perron and his wife EVITA during the 1950's. Their story is now legendary with musicals and films based on their life. "NO" is the third part of a political trilogy by Pablo Larrain. His two stars, Gael Garcia Bernal is leading the No plebiscite to rid Chile of Pinochet while Alfredo Castro, a superior in the same ad agency is leading the YES plebiscite to keep Pinochet as President. They are so very good in their roles while never being over the top. The period piece of 1980's Chile comes to life in a sordid, corrupted way which lends so much authenticity to the piece. Newsreels, newspapers, interviews of the period all lend to realism as authentic as it gets. This is not a negligible small film from South America. It is doing very well along with Amour, well, as well as foreign films can do. The other three foreign nominees including the much hailed Kon-Tiki seem no where to be found and seen Try not to miss NO especially if politics is your game!
