Odd Man Out is a very good "film noir" from Sir Carol Reed. But it differs in several aspects from Hollywood "film noir". It all deals with the Northern Ireland problem without ever mentioning the city name of Belfast or the IRA. This was done to make the feature more appealing on an international level and most definitely to avoid anything that was so politically charged! James Mason as Johnny McQueen is in splendid form in this 1947 flick. Kathleen Reed is definitely not anyone's idea of the "femme fatale" but she gives a remarkably understated performance. In contrast, Robert Newton, to my mind, is way over the top.
