One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

When Cuckoo's Nest won all 5 major Academy Awards... Film, Director, Writing, Best Actor and Best Actress it became the second time a film accomplished this feat since 1934's It Happened One Night. Directed by the great Frank Capra. There was a problem, however, as no actress wanted to play Nurse Ratchet because of the wretchedness of the character. Geraldine Page turned it down though she would have made an awesome Ratchet. Anne Bancroft refused it so Director Milos Foreman had to settle on a little known actress called LOUISE FLETCHER and, as they say, the rest is history. Michael Douglas won an Oscar for producing the film and as much as he might have wanted his father Kirk to repeat his Broadway triumph as McMurphy, he was definitely too old. But no fear Jack Nicholson was around and ready.

This is perhaps the best film of director Milos Forman surpassing even AMADEUS. He took a perfect screenplay and directed it with great care and sensitivity lavishing a great deal of time with all actors, major and minor. Both Jack Nicholson and Louise Fletcher are so utterly perfect in their roles that they literally embody the persona. The tension in the asylum is built up steadily until you yourself are at the breaking point. Practically everyone knows the plot of Cuckoo's Nest from either the novel, the Broadway play based on the novel and this miracle of a film which forever will remain a masterpiece. There is literally not one thing wrong with it however hard you try to look. And Jack Nicholson and Louise Fletcher... my god how well they worked together though total antagonists. Each more than richly deserved the Oscar. One of the very best films emanating from the almost dead Studio System.
