    One, Two, Three

James Cagney's second last film. A comedy about a Coca Cola executive in Berlin makes for some seriously hysterical comedy. Arlene Francis in a rare screen role is perfect as Cagney's wife. Horst Buchholtz, the charismatic, handsome actor who made a big splash in Hollywood for a number of years died too young but he will never be forgotten especially for the film FANNY. Pamela Tiffin plays his love interest. This is a perfect screw-ball comedy to my mind as anything that can go wrong does go wrong. The energy and pace of the film is electrifying and truly hilarious with James Cagney giving an uncharacteristically COMEDIC performance. It struck me a bit odd that he would exit Hollywood with this mad cap comedy only because he was known for such a tough guy and heavy in most of his films. It shows what an exceptional actor he was shifting gears to give this outstanding performance. He was only 61 when he left Hollywood which is kind of sad as he was such a great actor. All the accolades and awards that came his way after retirement were most deserving. When Milos Forman persuaded Cagney to do a supporting role as the detective in RAGTIME based on the best selling novel, Cagney then in his 80's was barely recognizable and performed in a wheelchair throughout. I agree with actors who won't make a comeback in very late life. It was very sad to see Mr. Cagney in that state! How much more glorious to have remembered him as that fireball, crazy executive in ONE TWO THREE or his earlier films. JAMES CAGNEY was one of the truly greats who had a contract at Warner Bros. Playing with all the great stars from Mae Marsh to Bette Davis to Doris Day in LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME for which he was Oscar Nominated in 1956. An actor no one will forget!
