This Canadian yarn is good on several levels with P. S. Hoffman as a hopeless addict to gambling, not a malicious guy but just hooked on the thrill. He's actually just some ordinary Joe with a simple banking job. Hoffman has proved to be a mighty Oscar winning character actor who, I can say without reservation, has rarely if ever made a bad film before his untimely death due to a drug overdose. This earlier effort shows him in fine form. It is evident from Owning Mahowney that he was going to go on to very great heights... which he did. Too bad he destroyed his life with dependency on drugs depriving us of all the great performances we will never get to see. He was one of the best in the trade.
