To be completely honest, I thought the trailers for Paddington looked awful; unfunny, and not at all charming or clever. So I was certainly very surprised when I found that the movie received almost universal praise from critics (it currently sits at a 98% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes), enough so that I was willing to give it a shot. I still wasn't expecting too much from Paddington, so I still didn't have very high expectations walking in; coming out of the theatre however I found myself pleasantly surprised! Not only was the film "not horrible", but it was in fact, very, very good! From the quality of the promotional adds and previews, I was not expecting any wit to the film's humour, nor was I expecting that I would actually laugh out loud a few times. There is a reference to a certain action film that hopefully many older audience members catch on to, as I found it to be very clever. In some ways, Paddington reminded me of the original Stuart Little film with its themes of acceptance and family, while also presenting plenty of fun gags and slapstick humor. The fish-out-of-water premise enabled some cliche (but still sometimes noteworthy) gags involving miscommunication. Paddington doesn't try to take itself too seriously, but manages to be a really good film for families.
