Umm... why? Dustin Hoffman with an English accent playing an Italian uttering one word phrases like "basta" living in 18th century France. Ok. How about Jean Baptiste whose only mission in life and in this movie is to bottle the ultimate scent without anything else going on in his life. Unrealistic and boring. And he didn't just have an english accent playing a frenchman... his was COCKNEY! Hollywood, would you please give me a break. Did they not have preproduction meetings for this film? Alan Rickman is the only actor in this movie but unfortunately he is thrown into a jokefest. The only scent in this movie is the one when the movie ends and you will have to walk out pinching your nasal extremneties.

Sorry that you don't like this movie... maybe you need to reed the book to better understand this wonderful movie.
A movie needs to be able to stand on its own. Reading the book to 'better understand' the story should NEVER be a prerequisite for enjoying a film adaptation. If the movie requires you to read a book or watch a TV show to help you understand it, then it's a failure because it's not self-contained.
