    Poltergeist

I must admit to never having seen the original Poltergeist, therefore I was able to go into this movie with no pre-conceived bias, and "judge" it without comparing it to the original. Poltergeist is mildly entertaining, and occasionally makes you jump, but isn't anything special. Contrary to many so-so or bad horror films, one of the things I didn't mind about the Poltergeist remake was the acting. I wouldn't consider myself a fan of Sam Rockwell, but I enjoyed seeing him in this film as a recognizable face. The two chid actors, and one teenager, didn't do a bad job either, and I found them at their best when they were interacting with Rockwell (the father in the movie) in scenes. This group of actors seemed to play well off of each other, and they were at their best when they were together. As a movie Poltergeist understood what it was, and didn't try to be anything more. It didn't add on layers upon layers of story when story wasn't necessary, and it moved through the plot relatively quickly, making for what was a seemingly short movie. Films like Poltergeist don't hold my attention for long, and this film paced itself well enough that the credits rolled before I got bored. While I admit to enjoying aspects of Poltergeist, it ultimately failed in what it set out to do, and that is be scary. I can see this movie becoming a classic among eleven or twelve year olds who want to watch a horror movie but are too scared to watch something like The Conjuring. The few scares that this movie does provide are the cheap jump-scares (which admittedly did make me jump) As I said earlier, I haven't even seen the original Poltergeist, but I have seen enough knock-offs of the original film that when I watch this move, I think "I've seen all this before, and I've seen it done better." Generally speaking, Poltergeist isn't the worst movie out there, but it won't appeal to non-horror fans, and horror junkies themselves won't find it "scary enough." It's a mixed bag, but there is an audience for it out there who will enjoy it.
