This movie did not end the careers of " block buster " actors as the efuud stated, the man who gave REFLECTIONS IN A GOLDEN EYE a whopping 1. He obviously understands nothing of human nature, psychology or the unfortunate deviant behaviour that hit some people for no reason other than they were born with it. Obviously he understood nothing at all about this very serious literary work which angers me a good deal, especially since it's Ms McCullers who strove to be the best she could with her varied handicaps, dying at a relatively young age.
Carson McCullers was an author whom I respected a great deal from the time I first read "Member of the Wedding" and saw it on film with Julie Harris, Ethel Waters and 10 year old Brandon De Wilde. In her REFLECTIONS and the film adaptation, I looked past the grey areas to find a bold, honest film that obviously did not appeal to a mass audience back in the mid sixties. Seeing it in 2015, I consider it to be a masterpiece of sorts, John Huston, whom I believe directed it did a wonderful job with material that was daring and difficult back in the day. That material seems almost tame for our day and age. The performances of the four main leads, Elizabeth Taylor as a sadistic wife, gives one of her best performances of the 1960's. Ditto for Marlon Brando, an army man with obvious tendencies for the same sex. Julie Harris is perfection as the fragile," bi-polar" wife of Brian Keith who is always rock solid as an actor.
This film was so bold and honest I could hardly believe it was made like some 50 years ago. It was compelling from the start and I could not look away for a single moment or miss a single word. It is a film I intend to see again as I'm sure to find bits I missed the first time round!
