As disaster flicks go, this one is right up there with the best, or worst of 'em, depending upon your frame-of-reference. Some people can't stand The Rock but thankfully in this one he at least meets his match, rhetorically speaking and comes across as a real human being without any special superhuman powers to speak of, karate or otherwise. The storyline is predictable; family broken apart by personal problems, family separated and reunited in the face of disaster when they realize that love conquers all so they must literally go to the end of the earth for each other, the usual feel good stuff that goes with American flag movies like this unabashedly, the Poseidon Adventure on steriods. It's all been done before. The thing that is outstanding here is how much time and money Hollywood commands to be able to put multimillion dollars into dream-work computer animated productions like this to make it all seem so epic and catastrophic but it does get tiresome after awhile, I mean com'on, there's only so much emotion you can wring out of an audience before you lose all credibility and the thing begins to tank, which is about halfway through this movie. Where do you draw the line? Anyway, that is a statement in itself. I think the story was over the top, catastrophically speaking, forgive the pun but when the Big One does hit "cahliforhnia" (gratis Ahnold), will it be anything even remotely resembling this movie? There are those prognosticators out there who think the state will slide into the sea. (And where were the giant cracks along the fault line that should have shown up in the final scene? I felt cheated out of that one last look, which is after all, what the movie was all about! Lol!) This is one film that must be seen on the big screen to appreciate the full effects but then, are movies made for the big screen anymore when the producers know that they will all end up on little tiny boxes in our living rooms anyway?
