I've never been a tremendous fan of French Director Jean-Luc Godard though I wanted to see this film when re-released on DVD earlier in 2015 especially because of the two female stars, the incomparable ISABELLE HUPPERT and Nathalie Baye. It is a rather smart film, the story of the professional lives of three persons with sex peppered in for good measure.
" Every Man for Himself " is much more than the above simple premise. Godard is an intelligent man who always becomes rather philosophical in his films which belong to the French New Wave movement. The entire movie becomes a meditative tale of work, relationships in life and the importance of the elusive notion of freedom! There is nothing to really dislike about this film's premise or, for that matter, other Godard works.
Most love Jean-Luc Godard and the heights to which he has taken film, but for some reason I don't enjoy his work as I should, especially as a U of T French Professor. I never really have taken to Godard since a Graduate Student when I started taking French Cinéma very seriously! I readily admit that Godard is a genius and an enormously great thinking artist. I totally understand his work... I get it completely... I just don't care for his his opus as a whole whereas I can devour other French directors like Henri Cluzot, Truffaut, Claude Chabrol, Louis Malle and so many more on a weekly basis!
