This film really resonates with me. I was a child taken to see"Mary Poppins" at a grand traditional movie house. Took me back."Saving Mr. Banks", is kind of two stories in one, Reason, and result. Tom Hanks lit the candle on this one. A Disney right on the money, for what Disney's legacy creates as expectation, of the man. Much harder to sympathize with the torn psyche' of Mrs. Travers. Emma Thompson plays her quite rigidly, which does drive the film. Fine job, to get the damage seeping out of hyper correct. The Disney staff cast are utterly good, likely and true. Giamatti's role played with subtlety and warmth. Travers' upbringing is well done, Colin Farrell very good, but Ruth Wilson's portrayal of a young mother stuck in her lot, exemplary. The young Travers', played well too. One thing that strikes me, is how like the image of its time, this film looks. Disney's complex glows, just that little bit extra, as you always imagined it would. So do the optimistic early sixties. Social revolutions, and cynicism really took hold a year or so later.
