    She Wore a Yellow Ribbon

One of the great Cavalry pictures, the second of a trilogy. Fort Apache (1948) proceeded it with Rio Grande (1950) following, 4 time Oscar Winning Director John Ford directs the Mighty John Wayne yet again in 'She Wore a Yellow Ribbon', a sentimental, glowing tribute to those Yanks on Steeds, the American Cavalry, who in a matter of not too many years would cease to exist altogether. The film is populated by Ford standard players such as John Agar, Ben Johnson, Harry Carey Jr., Oscar winner Victor NcKlaglen for The Informer in 1935, Mildred Natwick and the ingénue Joanne Dru. The cinematography of the coloured motion picture is beautiful beyond words winning an Oscar in 1949 for its magnificent contribution to the picture. But in the end it is a portrait of an aging Army Man (Wayne aged by 20 years) who gives one of his most moving performances ever as a Western Cavalry Leader in a career that saw him play every type of hero including those men of the West for which he was very much beloved. Two "nostalgias" were at play for me as I delighted in this flick, one the days of the old dying west; it must have been painful to see it evaporate before the eyes of those who loved it; secondly, that era of Hollywood I never knew, when the Western Motion Picture was one of the true pillars of American movie making. We deserve another great WESTERN and soon!
