    Simon and the Oaks

Simon och Ekarna ( Simon and the Oaks ) is a saga of 'intertwining' families that all starts in 1939 Sweden as WW II is about to erupt. With 2 small boys, two families who somewhat take refuge in one another comes this immense saga told from the point of view of SIMON both as child and young man. The story is long ( the story line spans into the 1950's); it can get fairly complicated, but it is always intelligible. So many themes of a personal nature but also of family life are revealed that we come to realize that SIMON and the OAKS is nothing more than the enigma of life itself, the struggles we all face in one form or another because of our humanity. One has to have some patience with the film as it plods slowly along at times, very deliberately so, but it turns out to be a beautiful experience of much tenderness. The mainly Swedish actors are touchingly real in every aspect of their lives; Bill Skarsgard ( whom I would swear is of the Skarsgard acting dynasty) can only be defined as the perfect young man for this difficult role. When all is said and done, this Swedish tale directed impressively by Lisa Ohlin is moving, inspiring and suspenseful all within our sphere of destiny and survival. Strongly recommended!
