I didn't read one review here acknowledging Southpaw (is there a more generic boxing title?) as a 90 minute film trapped in 2 hours. It would be perfectly adequate if not for the 3rd act where Gyllenhaal and Forrest Whitaker 'bond'/mumble a lot to each other. These scenes bring the film to a crashing halt and it never really achieves lift-off afterwards. The film is o. k. The kid is the best thing - and the best actor - in it.
