    Summer in February

This is a wonderful movie which most people have let slip by. It is the TRUE English romance in the early part of the 20th century between the great painter Sir Munnings who came from very humble origins, the woman of Society, Florence who he eventually marries and their great friend, known in the film as Gilbert. Both men are in love with Florence; thus begins a tragic love triangle. The ending of this stunningly beautiful film will haunt you. What eventually becomes of these three characters (not seen in the movie) will sadden you tremendously. The movie stars Dominic Cooper as the great painter, Emily Browning as the woman both men love and Dan Stevens, late of Downton Abby, as Gilbert, a man who will remember Florence with the greatest pain in his heart for the rest of his natural life. This deceptively simple film wallops a big punch. It is photographed with a lushness that shows a true love for the material. The screenplay is not one bit stuffy or stilted as one might expect, the dialogue so down to earth, so real. Summer in February deserves all the accolades it received. It's a film I know I will see again. There is almost an urgent need to visit with these characters again. One deeply cares for them, loves them as one loves one's friends. One viewing is simply not enough for this amazing, sweeping romance.
