This film is a rare peek into the subcultures (including trannie, ethnic, the economically dispossessed) of a lower income enclave just minutes away from the Hollywood sign. To be sure there are moments of humor as well as drama in the proceedings. One cannot help but feel sympathy for the taxi driver and for the pathetic, gaunt, drug addled Dinah. The film reveals the universal truth that all people whether they are genetically XX, XY or XY altered seek comfort and affection wherever they can find it regardless of the worthiness of the objects of their affection. The movie is innovative in the use of iphones with attached anamorphic lenses and offers an almost neon-like appearance to the exteriors. However for me the film has received an overwhelming amount of praise from film festival attendees (eg. From Sundance in particular) The approach to the story line and the free-flowing oft unintelligible dialogue not infrequently punctuated with salty language grew tiresome.
