    Tender Mercies

Tender Mercies is far and away one of the best films dealing with country music and the problems of a small family and community. Robert Duvall, an alcoholic ex-country singer gives a performance in which he totally shines, very deserving of the Best Actor Oscar for 1983. Betty Buckley is amazing dramatically and vocally. But then the film is filled to capacity with great performances from the likes of Ellen Barkin, Wilford Brimely, and a super performance from the then popular TESS HARPER. Director Bruce Beresford is again at his best. He is a very under-rated director, never receiving an Oscar Nomination though his films have won Oscars as top film of the year. Tender Mercies, I believe, was written by the genius of Horton Foote. The tensions that run through this film keep you gripped closely to its every word. And if one enjoys country music, this film is an absolute feast. Though not a country fan per se, the music reeled me in big time. It's a superbly written film acting of the first calibre and the delight of all those amazing songs.
