Greek director Michael Cacoyannis directs this classic LAST play by Anton Chekhov for the 1999 film adaptation. Not much happens in the course of the film save dealing with a Russian family's problems, their cultural futility as upper class scions trying to maintain their grip in a changing world plus the accurate vision of the status of the emerging bourgeoisie and their new founded materialism. The necessity of selling the cherry orchard to lower classes is all symbolic of life changing like never before. Good, but as with all Chekhov works, a great deal of dialogue and not much action! Much better to see on the theatrical stage!
