The Dance of Reality is Jodorowsky's first film in 23 years and he has a lot of pent up emotion to release. On the surface the film deals with Chilean politics and religion but it is overpopulated with ideas that could well form films of their own. On the political side we have Stalin and the harsh Chilean dictator Ibanez so we know we are in the late 1940's or very early 50's. The theme of adolescence plays a large part in the movie much like a few Fellini films. But the most striking thing about DANCE OF REALITY is how Jodorowsky makes the film one of spectacle using mythology, imagination and surreal elements that at times are just over the top. He's rather the philosopher in this film as well leaving us with the notion that REALITY is not objective but one created by our own imagination. There is just too much going on in the course of one film. A complicated film definitely not for all tastes. I probably should have rated the film higher as it's such a deep, personal commitment made with much love, BUT I would have to conclude (in this case) with the maxim that sometimes LESS IS A LITTLE BIT MORE!
