John Schlesinger paints a portrait of Hollywood that is very black and bleak in a dramatic thriller of sorts that will keep you interested for the entire two and a half hours. We are not dealing with the glitzy part of Hollywood but rather its underbelly. We meet people on the edge in a part of Los Angeles that can be called poverty row. Burgess Meredith is sensational as an Oscar Supporting Nominee, but the real meat of the film is the strange, introverted character of Homer Simpson played by Donald Sutherland who was robbed of an Oscar Nomination in one of his best roles. I highly recommend this film that gives such a brilliant idea of Hollywood as it was in the 1930's, part of the Depression era.
