Far too many fight scenes which were not very well choreographed and finally became boring. Several characters need not be in the film at all. Galadrial (played by Cate Blanchette) added nothing to the story. At one point she said to Gandalf (played by Ian McKellan) that if he ever needed her, she would come. This gave the impression that an occasion would arise that he would be needy at some point in the story, and she would mysteriously appear. It never happened so what was the point of her character? The famous ring with its powers of invisibility was used only once when there was at least two other opportunities to use it with effect, which would have added to the story line. Too many battle scenes ended up at the edge of a cliff, which made the effect repetitive and somewhat boring. Then at the end, when the dwarfs finally saw their homeland way off in the distance, we were not given the opportunity to see them settling in. Presumably this will be Part 2, which hopefully will not be another three hours. The best part for me were the panoramic shots of real mountain and valleys, but then National Geographic does this better.
