    The Killing of Sister George

SISTER is or was the word used to refer to a nurse in the U. K., just in case someone doesn't understand the use of the word in the title. Lead actress Beryl Reid's character is being killed off on the soap opera in which she appears. Well from this rather innocuous premise we get a lesbian film which obviously was far too ahead of its time in 1968. My God! That's a lifetime ago. I was enjoying the film a fair amount till about the half way point when I knew the inevitable would happen. The stereotypes start creeping in as the bull dyke character vies with a more genteel but conniving woman for the affections of the sweet, beautiful Susanna York. The film actually gets pretty vicious much like the gay film The Boys in the Band from about the same period. SISTER GEORGE was a bit hard to take even in 2015. How did they get away with such a graphic plot in 1968? That's the really big question!
