    The Kiss

Now this is the melodrama to beat all melodramas with the very young Greta Garbo (1929) just a few years into her MGM contract starring in what is initially a kind of love triangle, which I guess is no love triangle at all as Irene (Garbo) is in love with a younger man (Conrad Nagel), her husband totally unaware. BUT THIS IS NOT THE MOVIE AT ALL, a mere prelude or dalliance.

As stated this is not the CRUX of the matter in THE KISS that turns in every possible way, and not for the good. The Young Lew Ayres eventually kisses Garbo which sets in motion a series of disasters that culminates in events you won't quite believe. The thing that got me most was seeing these stars as 20 something year olds, quite an eventful cinema experience.

On a personal note, except for CAMILLE and NINOTCHKA, I never found Garbo's acting style at all convincing; she has lapses even in the lush, gorgeous George Cukor Camille. She had this languishing air about her that never seemed convincing to me. Check out GRAND HOTEL to understand what I mean. That is why she probably never won an Oscar in competition and why she decided to retire, in her later 30's, in 1942 never to return to films though she was begged over and over again. I think she made a wise decision as she was a woman who wanted to be on her own, no ties to anyone.
