The Lady in Number 6: Music Saved My Life

The Lady in Number Six, (2013) which can now only be viewed on DVD is a film I put on very late last night thinking that was a pretty stupid move as it would probably depress the hell out of me. It did not. We have seen a gazillion accounts of the Holocaust in every semblance and form yet here was ANOTHER Holocaust account of which I knew nothing. The Lady in Number 6 refers to the 109 year old Alice Herz Sommer who obviously survived that barbaric Teutonic history. In today's age when almost everybody has everything yet most people are unhappy or under psychiatry... this woman who went through the torture of hell will try to tell each and everyone of us how to live a long and HAPPY LIFE. Obviously all our gimmicks and gadgetry haven't helped in what we thought would be a cure-all. Unlike our age who never discuss such themes, she explores laughter as a great medicine, how to remain optimistic in life, and my particular favourite, as I am a huge classical fan of opera, ballet scores, the symphonic, art songs, and many other forms of music... I even enjoy some country, the importance of music as it is balm for the very soul. I had an immediate connection to this wondrous woman though she could be my great-great grand mother. All the extraordinary things of her past, be it photographs or even film footage reveal an extraordinary life of a woman who never complained but got by the best she could. Today's society truly could learn life's work and worth from Miss Sommer. In my eyes the account just shows how pampered, truly spoiled we are today, a mankind that would be unable to cope with adversity should it come up in today's world. What an Inspiration! Thank you Miss Sommer.
