    The Lady Vanishes

THE LADY VANISHES is Alfred Hitchcock's great last film before moving to America for good to work with producer David O Selznick. This thriller, all taking place on a train, is a great send off from merry 'ole England. The great Margaret Lockwood whom one rarely sees as the younger star suspects something foul has happened to a travelling companion. It's a thrilling joy ride with Sir Michael Redgrave as an ally and Dame Mae Whittey as an older passenger; Paul Lukas plays a different type role before going on to great fame on Broadway and winning an OSCAR for Lillian Hellman's great NAZI war story Watch on the Rhine co-starring Bette Davis... There are a few remakes of LADY, a fairly recent one, a very good rendering of the Hitch tale. But no one will surpass Alfred Hithcock's little masterpiece that is fun, has great ambiance, with a real urgency about it. Hitch had the knack from his very first film, The Lodger from 1928. This is a must watch film.
