    The Last of the Mohicans

A pretty unusual film for Daniel Day "GENIUS" which I saw when first released and still young enough ( well I was a kind of late teen, whatever that's supposed to mean ) to enjoy it fully as a great adventure. Day chose wisely as MOHICANS is a damn good film in every conceivable way. I recently re-saw it with my 9 year old who absolutely loved it. So the memories are very fresh in my mind! The performances from Day-Lewis and Madeleine Stowe ( what happened to her? ) are formidably terrific, the cinematography of that wild time was exceptional, the screenplay was a huge plus and a lot of credit has to go the genial director. As a type of action star necessary for this film, Daniel was a great choice for the film. He's handsome, fit, he can move like a leopard and his acting skills are unbelievable even in this film that many felt was beneath him. I loved Miss Stowe as well.

I was very happy to have revisited this gem with my son. I sort of forgot that it is a truly remarkable film. But then, Daniel Day Lewis only makes worthy films every 3 or 4 years or more, the SCRIPT having to be in the excellent category or he simply won't make it. The dude could be starring in 3 or 4 films a year raking in the doe big time as he's wanted by every producer world wide, but the THREE TIME Oscar Winner ( a male record for lead performance ) with many other nominations is only content with powerful grade A material. He's a happy man living in Ireland with wife Rebecca, daughter of famed playwright Arthur Miller, and their children. I would have to say he is easily my favourite film actor of all time and will easily be the number one male star of the 21st century as chosen by the American Film Institute. By the way, a bit of a surprise, HUMPHREY BOGART came in at number one as the greatest star of the 20th century.

Final note on the LAST of those Mohicans. I repeat it's an extremely entertaining film, but a worthy film of very high calibre. MOHICANS was made twice before this version, with the Day-Lewis version taking top laurels by a country mile! A re-make is usually crappola! This most recent version of the famed novel is a must see! I can be very stingy when rating films and an 8 was firmly stuck in my mind. Having just re-seen Mohicans, I'm putting it at 9!
