    The Leopard

This Italian masterwork with Burt Lancaster adding very significant star power to this near perfect ITALIAN historical film on the unification of Italy is an epic in the grandest sense. Luchino Visconti was at the very height of his creative powers and IL GATTOPARDO didn't disappoint. Based on the world-wide best seller of Giuseppe di Lampedusa, the author became one of the writers of this 3 hour film. A six hour version exists, but I've no idea if ever released theatrically. The film becomes an enlightenment of the 20 plus years of struggles and war as 3 main groups, all working for a common cause, finally achieve their goal by 1870.
