    The Letter

William Wyler directing Bette Davis makes for a combo that is hard to beat. Based on the Maughm short story, the opening will shock you as it explodes onto the screen like no other Davis film. It's as sensational as a FRONT PAGE headline of the worse kind. Bette is a devious, deceptive woman with a loyal husband ( Herbert Marshall ) but there is something or someone lurking about none to pleased about her wanton ways. Nominated yet again for the Oscar, Miss Davis gives a nuanced performance unlike any other film she made. The coolness and calm of her performance is so ironic for what is to come. This performance truly demonstrates why Bette was voted the #2 Best Female Actor of the 20th century by the A F I. Gale Sandergaard in a Supporting Oscar Nominated performance will wow and shock with a bare minimum of dialogue. This is an absolute must for cinéphiles of classic movies.
