The Living, a new film that delves into domestic violence and possible retribution is a very dark tale that does very little to illuminate this wretched condition. The problems of the film are many. First off, the physical abuse of the wife, her physical and emotional state come across as pretty poor at best in this indie. To make a real statement, a true reality of the situation would have to be shown but never really is! Its other theme of family honour, so to speak, leads to dire consequences that encompass lives in a host of tremendous turmoil!
Since "domestic violence" is so prevalent in our society, a film of this nature does absolutely nothing in making us understand the situation and possibly finding solutions that would lead to some hope. This neo-noir drama I feel is fairly irresponsible in putting out this material in an almost gratuitous way leaving us empty and devoid of real humanity.
