    The Longest Ride

The latter half was like someone patting your hand and saying "go ahead and cry if you want - it will make you feel better." I haven't wept so much in the cinema since We Are Marshall. So that was good. I think I lost about five pounds watching this.

Obviously you can insert Britt Robertson into any film and no matter how leaden the acting and wooden the dialogue, she will entrance the audience. Her soulful, expressive eyes are worth the price of admission, and when she kisses her beau in the photo booth you can almost feel the softness. She's a stunner.

Conversely, it was less appealing to have to gaze at Scott Eastwood's preposterously handsome mug, with his perfect jaw and twinkly eyes. I pity the attendees in the theatre not currently in a relationship because this is definitely a good, old fashioned romance about love between men and women. Cinderella was more realistic, though.

The Sparks motifs were similar to The Notebook: the young/old couple; death; wealth; war; hospitals; nature (especially rain and water); journal keeping and reading; even the aging, single parent sitting on the porch rocking chair!

What amazes is that the film still works, but that is entirely due to the charm of the actors. Take away the female lead and The Longest Ride has positively nothing to offer. Nonetheless, her presence elevates the entire enterprise.

Young men, bring your dates to this film. If you can stomach that Eastwood character, you're in.
