    The Manchurian Candidate

ANGELA LANSBURY steals the movie from everyone else though everyone in the movie is perfect. Supposedly, she was finally going to win her Oscar (1962) in this MIGHTY DIABOLICAL PERFORMANCE as the veritable mother from hell. She lost to Patti Duke for THE MIRACLE WORKER, but two years ago she was given a special Oscar for a lifetime of great performances. She so deserved this Oscar! John Frankenheimer has truly constructed a psychological drama worthy to be so called. One can't state much about anything in the movie lest one spill the beans. Suffice to say this is a brilliant piece of work. I admired Laurence Harvey's work immensely. One could feel his pain, anguish, panic... everything foisted upon him. What an American Tragedy to quote the Theodor Dreiser novel.
