Let's lay our cards on the table! Wes Craven is not a brilliant director, but some of his material is really good for a fun time, sometimes. However, this insane film that starts off benignly with poor people not even able to afford rent runs amuck in such an ugly, gruesome way that the film should have been slapped with an "X" rating! The crimes, the killings and debauchery depicted are so animalistic that I could hardly stomach it or stay till the end. It apparently was made with a comedic bent as is Craven's style but this was truly one of the sickest films I've seen. Why see such fare? I am genuinely interested in every aspect of film and film making and it's often a priority to see the junk for the work I do with film. HOWEVER, The People Under the Stairs really crosses the line, a disgusting sick film from a possibly deranged mind!
