    The Place Beyond the Pines

Beside a superlative cast with Gosling, Mendes, Cooper etc. and a story that can be quite thrilling, this film from Derek Cianfrance never worked and never caught on with the public. There are a lot of reasons for this: the actual filming technique but above all it's a film that never stops battering the viewer over the head as to its message. Despite the shortcomings, I liked the leads and did get somewhat caught up in the proceedings! The film is ultra violent with criminality of various types which may or may not have turned off the public. Who can say exactly why a film goes bust? Some real rotters have gone on to make hundreds of millions. There's no account for public taste!
